Ever wondered about our beautiful "Marconi Lounge"?
Fred Barton, Canada's first wireless operator was the guest of honour at a dinner at the new National Club in 1908 to discuss the wonder of the age, wireless communications. Guglielmo Marconi was essentially the Steve Jobs of his era. His invention and company began a regular transatlantic radio-telegraph service on 17 October 1907 between Clifden Ireland and Glace Bay, Canada.
The National Club opened its doors on December 17, 1907 and invited Fred Barton to speak about Marconi's world-changing invention. Since then, our main floor lounge has been called "The Marconi Lounge."
