National Club Rooftop Patio Floor Plan

The construction of the rooftop patio continues this week now that the foundation and frame is in.

Access to our 4th floor at the moment is limited to the elevator and back service stairs as we have closed off the top of the front stairwell to extend it to the roof. The elevator will also be extended to the roof so you can step out right into the enclosed year-round pavilion.

Here is the floor plan for the rooftop patio.

National Club Rooftop Patio Installation Photos

On Saturday, July 27th, the foundation of The National Club's new rooftop patio was installed. Bay Street was blocked off for the crane to deliver and install the steel beams and prefabricated structures.

Here are some of the photos of this major addition to our historic clubhouse.

After Bay Street being closed off and on for years for the construction of
Trump Tower next door, we get to close it for an hour for our crane.

The custom made lightweight beams come in.

The supporting cross beams are installed.

The frame for the year-round pavilion goes up.

Rooftop Patio Installation This Weekend

If you are in Toronto this weekend, come down and watch our rooftop patio foundation being installed. We will have Bay Street closed in front of the Club (Bay Street between King and Adelaide) for the crane lifting the beams to the roof between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Saturday, July 27th.

Also note that for mechanical reasons the Club will be closed this Friday and Monday to accommodate construction.

Watch for photos of the installation posted next week.

Structural Steel for Rooftop Patio

The structural steel foundation for the National Club rooftop patio is being prepared now. This is a photo from the plant of our actual beams. The patio deck will rest on these lightweight beams laid across the roof.

The excitement will begin the end of July when we close off Bay Street for the delivery and placement of the steel beams on the roof of the clubhouse so construction can begin in earnest.

The National Club's Rooftop Patio

Artist's conception of The National Club's rooftop patio (looking west from
one of the open spaces towards the year-round pavilion).

As you know, The National Club has undertaken an exciting new addition to our historic clubhouse - a rooftop patio. This large roof-top patio will be the only one on Bay Street in the financial district. It will feature elevator access to a year-round heated pavilion, with decked seasonal patio open space on either side.

The National Club has now been issued our building permits for our new rooftop patio. You'll see them on the front door as you enter at 303 Bay Street. Preparation work is already underway on the roof and the structural steel support frame has been ordered and is expected to be delivered at the end of the month.

Check back regularly for updates and photos as the construction progresses.

$71,000 Cheque Presented To The National Club's 2013 Charity - Wounded Warriors Canada

National Club Past President Lee Fisher presenting a cheque for $71,000 to
Wounded Warrior Canada organizers Scott Maxwell and Derrick Gleed

This year's annual Club Giving Back event was to benefit Wounded Warriors Canada, a non-profit organization that helps Canadian Forces members – be they full time or reservists – who have been wounded or injured in their service to Canada.

At the Club gala dinner on May 9th and our annual golf tournament we raised over $71,000 for Wounded Warriors Canada. The cheque presentation was yesterday at a luncheon with Wounded Warrior organizers Scott Maxwell and Derrick Gleed. Wounded Warriors presented Past President Lee Fisher with a scroll of appreciation for herself as event chair as well as The National Club.

Through a wide range or programs and services, Wounded Warriors Canada helps find solutions where gaps have left Canadian soldiers in need. Their primary focus is on mental health and the impact of post-traumatic stress, but helps any veteran in need as they make the transition to civilian life.

Since the National Club began our Giving Back charitable project, we have raised and donated over $228,000 from our members and partners.

The Toronto Flood

Dear Club Members,

I'm happy to report that Toronto's record-breaking flood yesterday had little to no significant effect on the Club. A little water seeped into the hallway from the door in the Scotia Plaza concourse, but didn't make it very far.

The most excitement came from the power failure when two of our staff members were caught inside our elevator. With the assistance of staff on the outside, the doors were pried open and everyone got out safely.

Everything is now working fine, the water vacuumed up and we remain open for business (and I rode the elevator myself today).

We hope you and your family survived the great flood of 2013 as well as we did.

Best regards,

Stephen Lautens
